Tube Laser Welding System
TUBE LASER WELDING SYSTEM
Metrol Technology required a highly precise laser welding solution for encapsulating electronic sensing and measuring equipment within tubular housings. To achieve this, Watt Laser was engaged to design and integrate a fully bespoke laser welding system capable of producing accurate, repeatable circumferential welds along the tube lengths.

Metrol require telemetry solutions capable of long-term deployment in spent oil wells. This by nature is a highly hostile, corrosive environment. The anticipated lifespan of the telemetry being deployed is greater than twenty years.
This required an in-line, automated process capable of welding multiple tube lengths together to create an overall product of up to 10m.
In partnership with Metrol and The Welding Institute, Watt Laser developed a custom 10kW, six-axis motion laser welding solution, designed and manufactured entirely in-house. This system integrates precision motion control, process monitoring and bespoke tooling to enable a stable, repeatable process.
This bespoke innovation not only met Metrol’s unique technical requirements but also demonstrated the transformative potential of precision laser technology in a heavy engineering application. The project went on to earn Metrol the AILU Laser Transition Award, recognising Metrol’s forward-thinking adoption of a laser-based process for real-world challenges.
