AILU Laser Transition Award: The Shift Towards Laser Processes

We are proud to see our customer, Metrol Technology, recognised for their successful transition to an innovative laser process – one that we were very excited to help bring to life.

Andrew Moig, R&D Project Engineer at Metrol shared:

‘We engaged Watt Laser to design and deliver a bespoke, fully automated, 10kW laser tube welding system. The system’s innovative design and performance were instrumental in Metrol being awarded the prestigious AILU Laser Transition Award 2025 – an achievement that would not have been possible without Watt Laser’s exceptional service and meticulous attention to detail. From initial concept development through to installation and commissioning, their team demonstrated consistent professionalism, clear communication, and delivered the project on time and within budget.’

The AILU Laser Transition Award is a new category introduced in 2025 to recognise organisations that successfully move from traditional manufacturing techniques to laser-based processes. It highlights practical, real-world achievements in improving efficiency, quality or sustainability through laser innovation.

Metrol earned this recognition for replacing a mechanical sealing method in a subsea pressure housing with an in-situ laser-welded solution.

This award is a fantastic example of how forward-thinking companies are embracing advanced laser technologies in manufacturing. It’s also a testament to the power of great engineering, strong collaboration and a shared commitment to innovation.

Congratulations to the Metrol team on this well-deserved achievement. Our 10kW laser system with 6-axis motion and full custom design is now successfully operational at Metrol HQ, a benchmark project for next-generation laser capability. Outstanding work from everyone involved.
